尊い

toutoi · とうとい

Precious; so lovely or moving it overwhelms you.

あ

Japanese changes fast. This entry focuses on how the expression reads in context, not just a one-word translation.

What it means

In fan and youth slang, 尊い (toutoi) is an emphatic reaction to a person, character, or moment that feels so beautiful, dear, or affecting that ordinary praise seems too small. The ordinary adjective also means noble or precious, so context determines which sense is intended.

How to use it

Fans often use it as a short reaction after seeing a favorite performer, character, or pair share a tender moment: 推しが尊い (my fave is so precious). It can be sincere, playful, or deliberately dramatic. It is informal and especially common in fan conversation and online posts; avoid assuming the speaker means literal holiness or respect.

Examples in conversation

My fave read a fan’s comment. That’s so precious……
Seeing these two laugh together is everything; they’re so precious.

Where it comes from

尊い is an ordinary Japanese adjective with older senses such as noble, valuable, or deserving respect. Sanseido documented a colloquial fan use for idols and characters as “very beautiful and endearing,” dating that sense to the mid-2010s. The fan usage overlaps with the older word but carries a strong, emotionally overwhelmed reaction.
